TurboTax security specialists work with the IRS and state revenue departments to prevent fraud. Though TurboTax Live is a standalone offering, you can add it even if you've already started preparing your taxes using any DIY product in the TurboTax line. You participate in one video meeting with them while they prepare your taxes. TurboTax Live Full Service Self-Employed ($359 federal, $49 for state as of this writing) connects you to tax experts who prepare your return for you, based on tax documents you provide them by uploading to the site. H&R Block offers a similar service, but prices are not available at this writing. You also get an expert review before you file. Essentially, you get connected to a tax expert you can consult as often as you need. TurboTax Live Assisted Self-Employed costs $169 (plus $49 per state filing) as of this writing, but that, too, is likely to go up later in the tax season. Which one you choose depends on what types of forms you need to file and how much help you might need. The Live edition of TurboTax comes in eight tiers, though they're split into two major groups: TurboTax Live Assisted and Live Full Service. You can communicate with these professionals all year long, so they can help with tax planning during the offseason. The help agent can see your computer screen with your tax return details if you allow it, but they can't see you. It connects you to a tax expert via chat or video call. TurboTax Live is a slightly different animal, one parent company Intuit introduced three years ago. These individuals will be able to use TurboTax Live Assisted Basic and take advantage of its expert help for free. TurboTax has announced a special offer for taxpayers with simple returns (as described above) that runs through March 31, 2023. TaxSlayer Classic ($19.95 for federal) supports all major tax forms and schedules, but its Self-Employed version ($49.95 for federal) offers additional tools and support for the self-employed. However, these services both lack the usability and support that makes TurboTax so exceptional. Cash App Taxes is free for both federal and state returns. FreeTaxUSA and Cash App Taxes (formerly Credit Karma Tax) are still totally free for federal filing, though FreeTaxUSA charges $14.99 for state returns. TurboTax remains the most expensive tax service, by quite a lot in some cases. TurboTax Self-Employed ($119 federal) lets you record income and expenses on a Schedule C and includes special guidance and features for self-employed individuals. You need TurboTax Premier ($89 for federal taxes) if you have to report investment income and rental property. Deluxe adds Schedule A to the free version, allowing you to itemize or take the standard deduction. The least-expensive paid tier of service is TurboTax Deluxe, for which the list price is $59 for federal returns. This includes taxpayers claiming the standard deduction and with no more than these tax situations: W-2 income, limited interest, and dividend income, the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and the student loan interest deduction. TurboTax's Free Edition is good for what it calls simple returns (Form 1040 only, with no additional forms or schedules). Expect discounts on tax prep services early in the tax season, with those discounts going away the closer you get to the filing deadline. There is a free option, but if you don't qualify, filing a federal return starts at $59. TurboTax's prices for DIY federal returns are the same as last year, though the cost of state returns has gone up. Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security Software.
